Effective Use of Internet Tools

A practical/skills-based subtopic — you're expected to already be competent at using these tools; exam questions test whether you understand the underlying etiquette and best practice.

Email:

  • Sending/receiving emails competently, including attachments.
  • Netiquette — responsible communication style online: avoid spam, keep attachment file sizes reasonable, don't forward unverified hoaxes/chain emails.
  • Monitoring and organising an email account regularly (folders, archiving, deleting) to keep it manageable.
  • Calendar — using a digital calendar to schedule events and share them with others for coordination.
  • Online storage/collaboration — using cloud tools (e.g. Google Docs, Office 365) to co-author documents, share notes and terminology lists, and manage tasks in real time with others.

Responsible use of the Internet, especially social media: think before posting, respect others' privacy, be aware that content posted online can be permanent and public even if 'deleted'.

💡 Exam Tip

Netiquette questions often ask you to identify what's wrong with a described email (e.g. huge attachment, forwarding an obvious hoax) — practise spotting the specific violation, not just saying 'be polite'.
